5 free non-linear video editors for Windows

This post aims to help those who, like me, suddenly became crowded with Movie Maker.

Video editors almost never interested me until last month with friends we decided to shoot something original for the New year. Our creativity was limited by the fact that, in speaking terms before unknown to me, to apply the effect of “Split screen” (Split Screen). That is to implement something like this:

We quickly realized that the default MM us for this task does not fit perfectly, and plunged into the world of non-linear instruments. They didn't seem a lot, judging by the Google results, and of course, to chose one, relying only on descriptions, was not possible. In short, it was decided not to spend the time to read reviews, and download and test.

In fact it turned out that most free programs for video editing is only functionally limited versions softiny that you can buy. Well, because for the same movie in a year to buy the program did not really want we were looking for such whose limits do not strongly contradict our needs. So there you go.

the

Lightworks

The old-timer among the programs of video editing, about which wrote habré in 2010. Then the promised source code so no-one seems to have not seen, but the program today offers installation for the three major operating systems.

System requirements: Intel i7, AMD or other CPU with higher frequency, at least 3 GB of RAM, 200MB of free hard disk space, video Card PCI Express (NVIDIA or ATI) with minimum memory 1 GB, support DirectX 9.

The Lightworks developers claim that their product is repeatedly used in Hollywood, during the filming of such films as “pulp Fiction” and “the Wolf of wall Street”.

It is believed that the “trick” in Lightworks is a perfectly implemented tool video cutting. About flawlessness and intuitiveness, I can not judge — after Movie Maker I all non-linear editors, at first, forced into a short stupor.

the deal

the

Declared in addition to the basic features: support editing with multiple cameras 100 built-in presets video effects, displays the image on the second monitor.

Opens formats: ProRes, Avid DNxHD, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, RED R3D, DPX, AVCHD and HD 422

export Formats: “archive” Lightworks or directly to YouTube/Vimeo in MPEG-4 format.

the Main limitation of the free version: allows you to export videos directly to YouTube or Vimeo doesn't allow to save the project on your computer in a readable format.

the

high quality

VSDC issued by Google among the first results for request “free video editor”, despite the fact that on Habre about it nobody wrote. The interface is modernity is no different and someone might even remotely resemble an Office. However, the gratuity and a wide range of tools, this slight lack of balance. The main advantages of high quality developers call full compatibility with all known formats, both at import and export. And in the settings you can even select the codec H265/HEVC, which as you know, gives you maximum image quality with high compression of the file. Those who plan to handle the video in 4K resolution at this point will especially rejoice, because in the other free tools such a possibility has not been noticed.

System requirements: Intel, AMD or compatible processor with a frequency of 1.5 Hz, 256 MB RAM, 50 MB of free hard disk space.

the

Declared in addition to the basic features: more than 20 presets of color correction in the style Instagram filters, many audio and video effects, including layering, masking the object, Chroma Key, wizard for creating slideshows.

Opens formats: AVI, QuickTime, HDVideo, WindowsMedia, DVD, VCD/SVCD, MPEG/MPG, DV, AMV, MTV, NUT, H. 264/MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, MJPEG

export Formats: AVI, DVD, VCD/SVCD, MPEG, MP4, M4V, MOV, 3GP/3G2, WMV, MKV, RM/RMVB, FLV, SWF, AMV, MTV

the Main limitation of the free version: in addition to hardware acceleration, constraints are either absent or indicated implicitly. If somebody will find — wait in the comments.

Resolve

From DaVinci I have left a dual impression. On the one hand, the set of tools and interface, it noticeably stands out compared to other free programs, is the feeling of a really powerful professional video editor. And, as in the case of VSDC, there are no significant for the average user the differences between the free version and the commercial for $995 (!). On the other hand, Davinci Resolve makes high demands to the graphics card, since the application of the changes are implemented in real-time. It certainly impresses me as a user, but also periodically drops the entire process is not enough on powerful computers.

System requirements: 12 GB RAM (recommended 16 GB), powerful video card with CUDA technology and recommended memory 3GB monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 and above.

The biggest emphasis in the tweaks done on Davinci Resolve color correction tools. If you are looking for is Hollywood-level image is not a priority, then perhaps you, like me, not enough patience to figure out the settings. But judging by the tutorials, with color davinchi really can work wonders.

the

Declared in addition to the basic features: professional color correction, cropping, mixing audio, working with text, support for OpenFX plug-in for adding transition effects.

Opens formats: Davinci opens most video formats, but preferred working for him — ProRes, therefore, before conversion is recommended.

export Formats: AVI, QuickTime, MP4, MOV, APNG

the Main limitation of the free version: Davici Resolve is clearly counting on an audience of professionals in video editing, so in the paid version made are likely unimportant for the average user buns as joint editing, noise reduction and editing of stereoscopic 3D.

the

Hitfilm Express

In Hitfilm Express focus on special effects, and it becomes clear from the first seconds on the website, which is made using effects of Iron Man (at the time of writing, however, was changed to Star Wars). Then you and "shaking", and "rain", and "blood spatter." The second competitive advantage of this editor — compositing tools for combining visual effects and 2D/3D animations that, if you believe the forums, no way inferior to Adobe After Effect.

System requirements: 1.2 GB free hard disk space, 4 GB of RAM (the recommended amount is 8 GB), graphics processor with 2 GB of memory (at least 512 MB).

Have Hitfilm Express is quite simple and intuitive interface compared to many non-linear editors, but at the same time, it's a shame that support formats such as, for example, AVCHD and MPEG-2 carried in a section of paid opportunities that you can get for $10.

the

Declared in addition to the basic features: over 180 visual effects and presets, 3D compositing, animation and graphic editor, Chroma Key.

Opens formats: Quicktime, AVI, MOV, MP4, MPEG-1, MXF, DV, and HDV WMV

export Formats: QuickTime, MP4, AVI video and upload to YouTube direct

the

OpenShot

Speaking about free video editing software for Windows, it is impossible to ignore the beta version of OpenShot is one of the first open source tools and an eight-year history. By the way, habarovchanin this project may be interesting for its campaign on Kickstarter, where in 2013 a new version of the Creator of OpenShot has collected more than 2 times more than the required amount. Originally developed for Linux, this tool claimed the title of the most intuitive professional video editor.

System requirements: 8 GB RAM (minimum 2 GB), 64-bit 4-core processor, video card with support for OpenGL 3.2 and 2 GB of memory.

The interface of Openshot, perhaps, do the most minimalistic I've ever seen, and the same can be said about the range of options. When you first launch the program, each step is accompanied by a tooltip, although menu items seemed so intuitive that to get lost in them is impossible. I confess to fully test it never came — after a few times of a forced shutdown Openshot, my patience is no longer enough.

the

Declared in addition to the basic features: video effects, including Chroma Key, 3D animated titles, animation and overlay watermarks.

Opens: all FFmpeg formats, including WebM, AVSHD, HEVC

Export: is as direct uploading to YouTube and Vimeo and the ability to customize export settings, choose the bitrate, format and codec.

Of course, this is not all free video editors that exist on the market today. However, after testing every one of them, I can vouch at least for what you do not expect surprises in the form of a watermark, no sound after export or inability to save the project, as is the case with some "pseudomembrane programs."

Add in the comments your options, to collect a more complete list of nonlinear tools for thorough testing would be nice.
