IntelliJ vs Eclipse: JetBrains Toolbox or Yatta Launcher?
From the interpreter:
The following is a translation from the German amusing interview with Frederick Abelshauser, where he reveals the attitude of the company Yatta recently released JetBrains Toolbox.
The creators of IntelliJ IDEA was JetBrains published application Toolbox to build and customize products JetBrains. Analogous to Yatta is Eclipse Launcher. We (the author of the text, JAXenter — approx.per.) talked with Frederick Abelshauser (Yatta) on the similarity of these two tools and about an old rivalry between Eclipse and IntelliJ.
JAXenter: JetBrains recently released their "Toolbox". You, in turn, started with Yatta Launcher — similar project for Eclipse. Is it possible, in your opinion, to draw a parallel between these two tools?
Frederick Abelshauser: Our team Yatta Profiles every day, of course, is watching what new products appear in the market software tools. In the end, we want to continuously improve Yatta Profiles and, through this, to answer a growing number of user requirements and to cover growing number of use-cases.
since at the moment some developers prefer IntelliJ IDEA, not Eclipse, then we will, of course, particularly closely the developments around these IDE. Similarities between JetBrains Toolbox is still a very young product and our Yatta Launcher — app that is a Central part of Yatta Profiles — immediately catch the eye.
JAXenter: what these tools look like?
Frederick Abelshauser: To begin with, in both programs it was a light-weight desktop application that brings in a list of various tools, respectively, of the development environment: if Toolbox is commercial tools JetBrains, and in Yatta Launcher — different builds of the Eclipse. Markedly similar principles of operation, user interfaces, including the location, functions, and UX looking to install JetBrains and Eclipse IDE.
JAXenter: Can you name a few specific examples?
Frederick Abelshauser: Tabs for tools and projects in the Toolbox is equivalent to the tabs for profiles, and packages in the Launcher (see screenshot). Is that in the Toolbox tab at the top, not the bottom as in the Launcher, in other respects, however, the items are almost identical: the product name and logo in the top left corner, menu in the top right.
to set the applications also contain very similar items, starting with the "Change proxy settings" (Toolbox) — "Edit proxy settings" (in Launcher), continuing the "Place of the default installation" — "By default settings", ending clickable "Run at logon" - "to Run Launcher when you turn on the computer":
JAXenter: What is actually the chronology of the releases of both tools?
Frederick Abelshauser: In September, 2015 was the first official release of Yatta Launcher. Already in 2014 we traveled to various international conferences and relevant presentations. A few records from there can be seen in the network, such as presentation at EclipseCon Europe 2014 (posted on 15.01.2015 on YouTube).
JetBrains Public alpha of Toolbox start only in may 2016, after JetBrains first for a good six months before presented in his blog program, which, interestingly, was called "JetBrains App Launcher". The first official release of the Toolbox followed in October of the same year, as can be understood on the basis of the blog post JetBrains.
JAXenter: But you indicate that JetBrains may "inspired" product Yatta. Is this, quite simply, not work-related, software — to watch their competitors and learn proven concepts and it is not necessary to immediately talk about simulation? After all, you yourself have noticed JetBrains Toolbox researching the market.
Frederick Abelshauser: of course, apply. Ideas do not occur in a vacuum. This is confirmed by numerous lawsuits and allegations of plagiarism of large companies, such as Apple or Microsoft, drag each other to courts, as part of the — have themselves become victims of accusations by unknown today, the ideological predecessors of theft (mean patent trolls — approx.per.).
But the competition invigorating effect on the business, ideas that compete with each other, all mutually acrylates. While we all share one goal: happy users. Certainly we learn from the individual features that have been proven and that delight our users, the other IDE.
What about Toolboxе, not any individual features Yatta Launcher became an example for him, but the whole concept of the app. That's particularly evident.
JAXenter: assuming that JetBrains Toolbox created, in fact, based on Yatta Launcher. What would it mean for you and Yatta Launcher?
Frederick Abelshauser: We in Yatta about you and, first and foremost, flattered that our free tool inspired by JetBrains. In the end, IntelliJ IDEA is the main competitor of the Eclipse IDE. We will behave in sports and are excited to compete for the best solution for developers.
JetBrains Toolbox has interesting and important implications, if you look at all of the Eclipse community, because in the circles of developers development environment IntelliJ IDEA, often served as a more modern, innovative alternative to the old Eclipse IDE. In this case, however, it becomes expressly clear that the Open source community Eclipse brings guiding, innovative concepts that have become an unmistakable example for the developers supposedly more modern commercial products. As for the Toolbox JetBrains, JetBrains was indeed a skillful imitator; But of course, the pioneer was the team from Eclipse. As enthusiasts of Eclipse, we are just as pleased as amused.
Frederick Abelshauser works as a project Manager and software engineer in Yatta. He has developed solutions in the field of e-Commerce as a consultant in various fields. Today, Frederick, as a project Manager deals with the integration of Eclipse solutions, from Yatta, and, in addition, also the development of profiles for Eclipse. In addition, he acts as the speaker presentations in the community Eclipse. Frederick loves cultures, travel and prefers to eat Breakfast in Barcelona (trump — approx.per.).
